Upgraded to 2.7, which is the most recent version supported by my ISP. I expect they’ll support 2.8 once 2.9 comes out. I have to say I do like the admin interface a lot more in 2.7 than 2.3.
Please let me know if you see any problems.

If I ever own a sports franchise, I’m so going to call them Placeholder for Winning Team

[NOTE: I wrote this in April of 2006, but for some reason never hit the "publish" button. All y'all get to see it now, with my compliments.]
I’m giving WordPress a shot to see how it compares to Movable Type. The UI is pretty slick, with similar features to MT. The one glaring deficiency that I’ve seen thus far is that it only allows you a single weblog. With MT, I can create several blogs. Why is that useful?, you ask.
I created one for general purposes (i.e. me to blather on about life), and I created one for uploading my cameraphone pictures to, and I created one to log links to Dr Who (and another, shorter-lived, one to log Isaac Asimov links. Don’t ask). And I created one for my son Alec to write on.
With WP, everything goes into a single blog, unless you install it multiple times in different directories.
One glaring advantage WP has over MT is its idea of “pages” separate from blog entries. And updating blogrolls is integrated into the UI, which means that I don’t have to edit .css files. Which is good, y’know, in the grand scheme of things.
Now to figure out how to get the preivous atom/rss feed URLs to redirect to the new URLs…
UPDATE: three RewriteRules later, and the old (static) MT atom/rss urls now redirect silently to the new (dynamic) WP atom/rss urls. I am so s-m-r-t.
Normal weekends are filled with housework, and with dragging various children to their extracurricular activities. Some shopping may occur.
This past weekend was atypical, in that a friend from Maryland came by Amtrak to visit. We got off to a rocky start as our reservation for a 7:45 meal at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse was honored 45 minutes late, but the rest of the weekend went uphill from there. Alec’s hockey team did an excellent job against a team that had, in their previous meeting, blown them out 15-0. They didn’t win, but they scored a goal and held the other team to 5. Then we went to the Museum of Science where we got to see a 3D presentation on the Sun with footage from NASA’s STEREO mission no less, and then we saw a laser light show in the planetarium set to Beatles songs.
That night, after the kids had gone to bed, another friend (a local one this time), joined us for a gaming evening, and a good time was had by all.
Alec had to deliver the popcorn on Sunday. He’d managed to sell $777 worth of popcorn for his Cub Scout pack, and now we had to distribute it to various houses. All but seven people were home, so that was a bit of good luck. Then we went to the Aquarium (becoming members yet again) and saw the Sea Monsters documentary in the associated IMAX theatre. Like the Sun documentary, it was also in 3D. The older two kids loved it; Zoe got scared about halfway through and needed to be held and continually comforted for the remainder. I hope we didn’t disturb anyone.
Monday, alas, our friend had to leave. I dropped him off at the Littleton commuter rail station, and he managed to make it all the way back to his apartment in Maryland without incident.
Housework be damned, we should do this more often.
It’s that time of the decade again – time to upgrade to 4.0. I’ll be doing that in a few days’ time, so apologies in advance if the RSS feed barfs.
Once, just once, I would like to be able to ‘activate’ my credit card without having unnecessary services being shoved at me. It’s as if they’re saying, here, call us up so we can abuse you for a bit.
Is there any way around this crap?
If they can do it, why can’t we?
Wil Wheaton is coming to Boston, but on a weekend I will be unavailable to see him!
Crappity crap crap crap.
Ta-da!
